Yesterday I downloaded Megaman 9 for my Wii, and it seems it is 1000 Wii Points I will never get back. Misunderstand me correctly, I do like Megaman, and especially the great Megaman X, which in my opinion is the greatest version of the game.
What troubles me is its difficulty. Most games have an easier level which has a learning curve to master the character and its abilities. Well, most older Megaman games are no introduction levels, but still, one of the levels are substantially easier than the rest. But in Megaman 9, you are faced with all kinds of monsters trying to kill you at the same time. Which wouldn’t be a big problem, if most monsters hadn’t needed about 5 to 20 shots to kill!
Another annoying aspect of the game is the that the jumps have to be so precisioned. Some of the jumps require almost pixel perfection. I was about 1/8 of Megaman’s foot away from the edge, and jumped as far as I could, but it wasn’t enough. You have to be more or less outside the edge to be able to hit that ledge in the middle of nowhere. And then… Start all over again.
I have tried all 8 levels, and I have only been able to reach one boss. And he seemed fair enough, if it hadn’t been for his concrete spew being Megaman seeking and removing about 5% of my health, stunning me for ever and then let Concrete Man jump onto me to take about 30% more of my health. Do this a couple of times and I am obliterated.
From earlier Megaman games you are allowed to charge your weapon in order to toss greater balls of… energy, or whatever you are shooting. This is abscent in Megaman 9, along with other things I miss, such as wall climbing and charging. Why remove the good stuff that made the game fun and replace them by close to immortal enemies?
If Megaman X had been available for the SNES Virtual Console, I’d urge you to download it right away, but Megaman 9… Stay clear unless you have an amazing temper management and have your Wii controller and TV insured. You’ll be very tempted to destroy them.
Yo!
Megaman9 was GREAT! 8bit music and a game that actually lasts. Over the last couple of weeks I’ve bought 4 new xbox360 games everyone of them completed in 1-2 days. I played Megaman 9 almost everyday for about a month before I completed it.
Can’t wait for Megaman10. Hope it’s not the X-series. Guess it’s a matter of taste
It might be an overall experience on the Xbox360, but the Wii was hard as hell. When I come to think of it, it could be the general lag you usually experience for the Wii that ruined enjoying the game. On a side note, I think Megaman 9′s monsters should’ve been nerfed by approximately 25% in health. Having to do the same jump pattern for 20 seconds for the first monster you meet in the level feels redundant.
I think Megaman X (the original X) kicked arse, but playing through X2 through … whatever was the last I played was just tedious.
Well, it was hard as hell, I can agree on that. I even cheated on the last level (youtube) to be able to complete it :p
The thing is, once you overcome the first boss, the weapon you get as a reward will “nerf” one of the other bosses. One of the other bosses has a weakness against that weapon. So, theres your 25% nerf.
The difference between the old 8bit games, and todays games seems to be the forgiveness of failure. Todays console/pc games I usually just play to see different cut scenes(or the ending credits, lol). Ye, I know, why even play the games if I’m not having fun while playing them!?
Megaman 9 on the other hand, I had SO much fun just playing the game, and talk about feeling of achievement when I finally completed it, wow, amazing.
Another game I enjoyed was Braid: http://braid-game.com/
